Forensic & Industrial Science Limited is a 100% New Zealand owned company that has been providing P lab testing services and inspecting suspected clandestine laboratories since 2004. We are accredited by International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ) for analysis and collection of surface swabs for methamphetamine.

We have attended hundreds of suspected P labs and have tested sites in Australia and throughout New Zealand.

In addition to providing P lab testing services our staff train clan lab decontamination contractors and give presentations at forensic science conferences.

All of our inspectors hold a University qualification in Forensic Science, Medical Science and/or Chemistry and our experienced team are happy to answer any questions you may have.

How do we test a property?

The P lab testing services we provide are in line with the NZS 8510:2017 Testing and decontamination of methamphetamine-contaminated properties published by Standards New Zealand on the 29 June 2017.

What we can do at site

  • Collect surface swabs and samples of building materials (such as insulation) for laboratory analysis.

  • Carry out pH testing on surfaces to check for acidic and alkaline residues.
  • Screen the air to measure Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs) present down to part per billion level.
  • Screen surfaces for the presence of mercury and/or lead.
  • Identify corrosion or staining related to drugs manufacture, fungal contamination and hazardous substances.
  • Inspect the grounds to examine for visual indicators of soil contamination and screen for VOCs and pH in soil samples.

During the process of manufacture of illicit drugs such as methamphetamine a variety of chemicals can be heated, stored, spilled and released into the air. Some problematic chemicals can ‘soak’ into furnishings and other porous materials and are re-emitted back into the air over long periods of time.

Laboratory services

We analyse samples in our laboratory by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to accurately measure the concentration of methamphetamine and pseudoephedrine on surfaces.

It is important to measure the amount of methamphetamine present on surfaces so that cost effective remediation recommendations can be made. Higher levels of methamphetamine may mean that linings need to be removed whereas at lower levels cleaning may be sufficient.


After initial P lab testing we provide a comprehensive report which details:

  • Sampling and analysis methodology.
  • Results and interpretation.
  • Remediation Guide including detailed recommendations for how the premises can be decontaminated (if required) and brought in line with NZS 8510:2017 decontamination levels.

We aim to complete analysis and reporting within 5 to 10 working days of testing. All reports are strictly confidential and are never forwarded to third parties without written permission

Remediation and Decontamination

  • Remediation should be undertaken by professionals experienced in clan lab decontamination.
  • Remediation can range from cleaning and removal of soft furnishings, to removal of all interior linings, contents and furnishings. 
  • It is very rare for houses to be demolished because of irremediable methamphetamine contamination.
  • While we are unable to recommend a particular decontamination contractor we can provide you with guidance when selecting one.
  • Your local Council may be able to provide contact details of suitable companies.


  • Once the property has been decontaminated, retesting should be carried out to assess effectiveness of remedial work.
  • The cost of retesting is not included in the initial testing estimate.

Remediation goals

  • A remediation goal is the level of residual contamination you are willing to accept inside your property.
  • A remediation guideline for methamphetamine on surfaces of 1.5 µg/100cm² in high use areas and 3.8 µg/100cm² in limited use areas is given in the NZS 8510:2017 Testing and decontamination of methamphetamine-contaminated properties.
  • The level of methamphetamine measured on surfaces is used as a proxy for other problematic chemicals that cannot be analysed for but may be present.
  • For this reason it is important to know the levels of methamphetamine inside your property before any remedial work is attempted.
